EWU was established in 1882 as Cheney Normal School, and it became Eastern Washington College of Education in 1937. EWU is a member of the Big Sky Conference and competes in NCAA Division I athletics. The university has 13 varsity sports teams, including football, basketball, volleyball, soccer, and track and field.
