When was Harvard established?

Founded as Harvard College in 1636 and named after its first beneficiary, the Puritan priest John Harvard, it is the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States and the world.

The Massachusetts Colonial Legislature and the General Court approved the establishment of Harvard. Norman Foster Ramsay Jr. was born on August 15, 1927, in Washington DC. He received his BA degree in mathematics from Columbia University in 1935. He graduated again from Cambridge University, but this time in physics. He received his Ph.D. In Physics from Columbia University in 1940. He married Eleanor Jameson in 1940.

During World War II, he led a 3-centimeter-wavelength radar research team at the MIT Radiation Lab for two years. In 1943 he moved to Los Alamos to work on the Manhattan Project. At the war’s end, he returned as a professor at Columbia University. He was instrumental in establishing the Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York. He moved to Harvard University in 1947 and taught there for the next 40 years. During this time he also worked as a visiting professor at Oxford University and the University of Virginia.
